Situated on the Bondgate arch as you enter the market town of Alnwick, The Gatehouse is a generously proportioned period townhouse arranged over 3 floors and benefitting from many original features such as open fireplaces, exposed beams and stone walls in most rooms.

Historically, the house was once an Inn before it became a dressmakers shop and the garden, store and buildings surrounding the house hark back to days gone by.

The house can be accessed directly from the street or can be entered via the front door or side gate which takes you via a short passage into the garden.

The Gatehouse can comfortably accommodate up to 9 guests over 5 bedrooms. Following the recent addition of a downstairs bedroom and en suite shower room The Gatehouse allows older guests or those with limited mobility to stay in comfort within an historical town centre property.

Decoration and furnishing throughout has been done to a high specification and much thought has been given to helping holiday makers feel relaxed and at home from the moment they arrive.

Over 3 floors the house offers 4 double bedrooms and one twin room as well as 2 en-suite shower rooms and a sizeable main bathroom on the first floor. The main bathroom features a free standing bath as well as a large shower unit both with period features.

The Gatehouse has been newly decorated throughout with gentle neutral colours that are sympathetic to the historic features. High end soft furnishings and decorative touches bring a feeling of luxury to the property as well as a fully equipped kitchen to help with in house catering.

The house can be entered through the front door from the street and you will find a small enclosed porch with double doors into the dining room. This room has a large dining table and original features such as exposed brickwork and a fireplace. There are shutters at the windows for complete privacy from the street and also light control. The room is furnished with contemporary sideboards and decorative touches that complement the surroundings.

The lounge is found to the left and also has period features. Shutters at the windows for privacy and light control help keep the lounge cosy and intimate whilst being open and airy. There are 3 setees close to the wood burning stove and a large TV with full Sky package and netflix available for entertainment.

The double doors take you into the sunroom , to the right are stairs with sizeable cupboard for storage of bags. Coat hooks and shelves provide plenty of space to stow your travel things away.

The kitchen is compact but has large windows allowing plenty of natural light in with views to the garden gate.

The sunroom is a wonderfully warm and quiet spot to sit and enjoy the late afternoon sunshine through the garden doors looking into the garden.

On the other side of the kitchen is the downstairs bedroom and en suite which comes with its own door into the garden. The bedroom has a double bed, built in hanging space and large drawers set within the fireplace with a wall mirror above. This bedroom was added so that guests with limited mobility or older family members could join multi generational groups without worry of managing the stairs. With that in mind, the en suite shower room comes complete with non slip mat, a fold up seat and grab rails for easier access.

The first floor has 2 sizeable bedrooms one with a new large en suite shower room and also the main bathroom.

2 further bedrooms can be found on the 3rd floor and are accessed by 2 short flights of stairs into the roof. Both rooms have velux windows with a fitted black out blind. The larger room has a king sized bed with drawers for storage and a built in hanging space. The 2nd bedroom is a twin room with single beds and a large chest of drawers for storage.

The garden is arranged over 3 tiers and was designed by the former owner who has the head gardener at The Alnwick Garden. The garden is an enclosed private space but there are nice views over historic buildings to be had from the top tier. Outside the sunroom there is a small paved area for sitting outside.

Within the Gatehouse guests will find a variety of framed photographs of the Northumbrian landscape and beaches which may provide some inspiration for your stay. Where possible Hourglass have used local trades and businesses to help make the Gatehouse the property it is. Our welcome pack is locally sourced and we have engaged with businesses in the town to help provide our guests with a variety of Northumbrian flavours including bread, cheese, biscuits and gin.

Details of places we recommend can be found in the welcome pack and we invite you to explore the town and find out for yourself why Alnwick is so special.

Parking- cars can be parked on the cobbles outside the house or on the marked spaces opposite for up to 2 hours at a time during the hours of 8 am – 6 pm Monday to Saturday. To do this guests will need to display a parking disc on the dashboard of the car. Discs are available for £1.00 from many shops nearby or from the parking machines and can be used every time you park in the town or car parks using the disc system. However, free parking for up to 24 hours at a time is available in 4 car parks located very close to the house – the closest being a 2 minute walk away and just round the corner from the house. Cars can be parked overnight outside the house and can be left from 6 pm to 10 am if the disc is set to 8.00am. Hourglass provide 2 parking discs within the welcome pack.

The Gatehouse is just a 2 minute walk to the back gate of the Alnwick Garden, less than 10 minutes to the castle gates and 5 minutes to Barter Books.

All shops, cafes and restaurants are within a few minutes walk of the front door and with a variety of independent grocers there is plenty to choose from if you prefer to not use the supermarket which is easily less than a 10 minute walk.

For convenience and ease of use the Gatehouse offers a user friendly experience and has access to roads heading towards Rothbury or Alnmouth right outside the door.

Hourglass look forward to welcoming you to the Gatehouse and wish you many happy days out and about during your stay.
