Dark Skies

The coast of Northumbria offers some fantastic star gazing opportunities and is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. The reasons why are very clear to see in the daytime but at night more so as there is almost no light pollution especially as you head inland towards Kielder forest.

Along the coast between Seahouses and Goswick there are plenty of parking places to pull in and enjoy the night skies. Low light pollution will provide opportunities to see the fantastic Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights depending on the time of year that you visit.

For a better view of different type of stargazing head towards the Battlesteads Hotel and Pub near Walk on the edge of Kielder forest has its own observatory and there is much to learn about the world above us through talks, activities and short courses that they offer.
